How to create a natural-look oiled timber deck with Bonnie Stacey Landscapes

Bonnie Stacey Landscapes spent months hunting for the perfect natural-look oil treatment for her Blackbutt deck.

After sampling many different products, Bonnie eventually found the perfect solution by mixing WOCA Denmark Exterior Wood Oil's Larch and White colours.

The mix provided a gorgeous natural colour with added UV protection to shield the deck from the harsh Aussie sun.

You can now recreate Bonnie's deck at home with the Bonnie Stacey WOCA Deck Oil bundle, available exclusively from auswoodcare.com.au.

Bonnie Stacey Deck Oil Bundle

Want to try before you buy? Our sample pack allows you to test Bonnie's preferred WOCA Exterior Oil mix before committing to the full kit.

The full bundle contains WOCA Denmark’s premium outdoor timber cleaner, an applicator and replacement pad, plus Larch and White coloured oils.

The eco-friendly, water and plant-based oils are easy to apply and strengthen the timber from the inside so you can enjoy it for years to come.

In addition to decking, they can also be used on Blackbutt or light-coloured timber fencing, cladding, planters, and furniture.

It may be possible to achieve a similar look with darker timber, but the colour ratio may need to be adjusted. Please get in touch for personalised advice.

The Bonnie Stacey WOCA Deck Oil bundle includes:

Coverage area:

  • 50m2 for two coats

 Not included:

  • Tannin Oil remover - we prefer Intergrain Ultraprep Tannin Oil Remover (available from Bunnings)
  • Garden hose
  • Pump sprayer
  • Stiff bristle nylon broom
  • Large bucket (at least 12L capacity) to mix the oil and something to stir it with
  • 120 grit sandpaper
  • Broomstick or paint roller handle
  • Clean cotton cloth

Instructions

STEP 1: Apply tannin stripper

  • Treat the deck with Intergrain Ultraprep Tannin Oil Remover, and follow the product directions carefully.
  • Leave to dry for 24-28 hours.

STEP 2: Clean the deck

  • Thoroughly wet the deck using the garden hose.
  • Prepare the WOCA Denmark Exterior Cleaner by mixing in a 1-part cleaner to 2-part water ratio.
  • Apply the solution with the pump sprayer – this allows you to dose the decking properly and reduces waste from the solution running between the decking boards.
  • Apply the solution in small sections at a time, overlapping each section.
  • Scrub each section of the deck with a stiff nylon bristle broom.
  • Rinse each scrubbed area with the garden hose, ensuring you rinse away all of the dirt and cleaning solution.
  • Allow to dry for at least 24 hours.

STEP 3: Prepare to oil the deck

  • Check the weather forecast! The deck must be clean and dry before oil treatment, so you cannot apply the oil during wet weather.
  • If it rains after you’ve cleaned but before you’ve oiled the deck, please allow 24 hours for it to dry before applying the oil.
  • It takes 24-48 hours at 20°C for the oil to harden thoroughly, and the wood must not get wet during this period.
  • Sand the deck to remove any rough fibres with 120-grit sandpaper.
  • Attach a broomstick or paint roller handle to the WOCA Denmark Exterior Oil Applicator (if required).

STEP 4: Mix the oil

  • Your bundle includes two different colours of WOCA Denmark Exterior Oil (Larch and White).
  • You should mix the oils in a 3-part Larch to 1-part White ratio.
  • Measure the oils and carefully pour into the large bucket.
  • Stir the oils together thoroughly.

STEP 5: Apply the oil

  • Use the WOCA Denmark Exterior Oil Applicator to apply the oil in a thin, even layer.
  • The applicator is a part sponge, part long-haired fibre, so after collecting the mixed oil from the tray, push downward in one direction to apply and pull back on the same line to remove excess oil.
  • If oil puddles appear in the timber’s joints and grooves, wipe them off immediately with a clean cotton cloth.
  • After a few minutes, the timber should look like it is saturated with oil
  • A second coat can be applied the following day using the same brush-on wipe-off process.
  • Leave to dry for 24- 48 hours. Please do not walk on the deck during this time, and ensure it does not get wet.

STEP 6: Clean up

  • Store leftover oil in a cool, dry place.
  • Clean applicator pads and brushes in warm, soapy water.
  • IMPORTANT: All oil-soaked rags and cloths must be soaked in water before disposal to avoid the risk of self-ignition.
